Event Tue 3/6: Navigating Legal Challenges within the Commercial Space Industry

The commercial space industry is currently experiencing exponential growth which will continue over the next several years. This provides entrepreneurs, startups, and businesses novel opportunities to embark on ventures into space and the space economy. One of the challenges to a successful space business is a legal minefield of regulatory schema unique to the space industry that must be navigated. For example, many do not understand the applicability of arms control regulations to manufacturing otherwise benign space technology. In this presentation, Charles Mudd will provide an overview of important regulatory regimes enforced through agencies such as the FAA, FCC, and NOAA. He will then focus particular attention on the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (“ITAR”) and related Department of Commerce regulations. Attendees will gain a better understanding of these regulations and specific guidelines to help them launch a legally compliant space business. Charles will conclude with his own vision for the commercial space industry, particularly in Chicago, and the opportunities for developing policies and regulatory schema to facilitate this growth.
